Aroostook War Map

The disputed northeastern boundary of the United States.

Introduction to the Richards Papers

This is an attempt to post a collection of papers, similar to the letters of a confederate soldier published here. These letters begin in 1839 and, for the most part, are written to Almon S. Richards.

In March of 1839 Almon Sherman Richards walked to Aroostook County, Maine, as a member of the Bangor Militia to fight in the Aroostook War. He left behind in Lincolnville, Maine, his father Nehemiah Richards, his mother Nancy Richards, and many brothers and sisters. Many of their letters to him have survived as have letters from friends, business correspondence, and many other documents. My intention is to make Almon Richard's story live by publishing excerpts from his documents here.
